Backlit Printing Near Me and How to Order Backlit Film Online
Backlit printing near you means a local sign shop or photo lab for one film panel today, or an online order for backlit film and backlit posters in sizes the shop does not stock, powered light boxes and SEG displays. Those three purchases run from $29.20 to about two thousand dollars, and which one you need depends on the fixture. This guide covers what a local shop does better and how to size and build the file.
Backlit printing near you means a wide-format sign shop, a photo lab running transparencies, or a display company that sells the lit frame with the graphic inside. A local shop wins on same-day pickup and on holding a sample against your actual frame; it loses on stock sizes, on hardware it has to order in anyway, and on the price of a single panel. Online covers the sizes local shops do not stock and checks the file before it goes on press. Backlit film starts at $29.20 for one 18 x 24 inch sheet, a powered light box at $328.42 for one, and an SEG backlit display at $1,899.00 for one.

Backlit film
Backlit film printing near you, in stock sizes or cut to size
Backlit film prints on 10 mil backlit film in eight stock sizes, from 18 x 24 to 48 x 96 inches, or at any size you enter. An 18 x 24 inch panel starts at $29.20 for one, you can order a single sheet, and the film ships in 2 business days, rolled in a tube. A local shop can match that for one panel cut from the 50 or 54 inch roll it keeps in stock. For a 24 x 36 inch menu insert, a 36 x 72 inch window panel or an odd size in between, an online order skips the wait while the shop orders film in. Add a free online proof if you want to check the layout before it goes on press.
Quick answer
Buy the print or buy the fixture, then measure the opening
Decide first whether you are buying a graphic or a lit fixture. If the frame on your wall already lights up, you need backlit film and nothing else. If nothing lights up yet, you need a light box or an SEG display, and the graphic is the small part of that order. Either way, order to the viewable size the frame lists rather than its outside dimension, and send the artwork untouched. Backlit stock is printed with a heavier ink lay because transmitted light passes through the ink once instead of twice, so any brightening you do by hand fights a correction that has already been made.
The Three Things People Mean by Backlit Printing
Type backlit printing into a search box and you get three very different purchases stacked on top of each other. Sorting them out first saves the most money, because the gap between them runs from under thirty dollars to about two thousand.
| What you order | What arrives | Needs power | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backlit film | The printed translucent sheet only, rolled in a tube. | No, you supply the lit fixture. | $29.20 |
| Light boxes | Aluminum frame, LED panel, diffuser and your graphic. | Yes, it plugs in. | $328.42 |
| SEG backlit displays | Booth-scale lit wall with a silicone-edge fabric face. | Yes, with the frame hardware. | $1,899.00 |
| SEG backlit popup displays | Collapsible lit backdrop that packs into a case. | Yes, LED bars on the frame. | $1,599.00 |
Read the third column first. If the fixture on your wall already lights up, you are buying a print, and the whole job is a file and a tube. The backlit film video overview shows that print lit from behind. If nothing lights up yet, you are buying hardware, and the graphic is the cheap part of the order. Booths sit in their own bracket because the frame has to travel, stand on its own, and take an SEG fabric face rather than a stiff sheet.
Where the Shop Down the Road Wins, and Where It Does Not
A local sign shop has one real advantage, and it is worth naming plainly: you can walk in with a tape measure, hold a printed sample against the actual frame, and leave with it the same afternoon. For a restaurant that needs a menu panel replaced before Friday service, nothing online beats that.
The advantage stops there. Wide-format shops keep one or two rolls of backlit film in stock, usually 50 or 54 inches wide, so an odd size gets trimmed out of the roll you are still paying for. Blank light boxes are rarely stocked at all; the shop orders the same fixture you would and adds a margin. And a one-off local print carries the setup cost of a job the shop will run once, which is why a single panel often costs more locally than a pair does online.
Online has its own honest limit. You will not see the graphic lit before it ships, and a large fixture crossing the country adds days that a same-city pickup does not. The way around it is to order the film and the frame together so they arrive matched, and to have the file checked before it goes on press rather than after. That check is easy to underrate, and it is the same one described in our walkthrough of how online printing works. If you want the price before you commit, the instant quote guide shows where the configurator lives.
A practical split: emergency replacements and single odd panels stay local, everything planned more than a week ahead comes from large format printing online, where the size range and the price break both open up.

Backlit Posters and the Other Signs We Print
A backlit poster is the same 10 mil backlit film cut to a poster size, 18 x 24 or 24 x 36 inches, for a poster case or a menu board that already lights up. If the case has no lamp, a standard poster on opaque paper is the right buy, because it is made for light that hits the front.
The lit range runs across four products, and two unlit signs often share the same job:
- Backlit film. Eight stock sizes from 18 x 24 to 48 x 96 inches, or any size you enter, from $29.20 for one 18 x 24 inch sheet.
- Slim light box. 24 x 36 inches in silver aluminum, with or without the backlit insert, from $328.42 for one box.
- SEG fabric. 6 oz fabric with a sewn 10 mm silicone edge, backlit or non-lit, cut to your frame, from $69.00 for one panel at the smallest size.
- SEG backlit display. A 10 ft lit wall, printed on one side or both, from $1,899.00 for one display.
- Unlit signs. Outdoor banners for the storefront and retractable banner stands for the booth floor.
Setting Up a File That Survives Being Lit From Behind
Backlighting changes what your file looks like, and it is worth understanding why before you start nudging sliders. On a poster, room light travels through the ink, bounces off the white paper, and travels back through the ink to your eye. It crosses the ink layer twice. In a light box, light leaves the LED panel and crosses the ink once on its way out. Half the filtering, so the same artwork reads lighter and flatter.
Printers compensate on their side, laying down more ink on backlit stock than they would on paper. That means the correction is already handled and you should not do it again. Send the artwork the way you would for any large-format job. A file that has been darkened by hand comes back muddy, with shadow detail gone.
What you do control is four things. Build at final size at roughly 100 to 150 ppi, since a graphic read from six feet does not need photographic resolution. Build black as a rich black with cyan supporting it, because 100 percent K alone goes thin and gray when the lamp shines through it. Keep reversed type a size step larger than you would on a poster, since light spreads into thin white strokes and closes up small counters. And convert to CMYK before you send, the same discipline covered in our CMYK and RGB conversion guide.
One more thing that catches people mounting film behind glass or acrylic: if the print faces away from the viewer, the artwork has to be mirrored before it goes to press. Ask which surface it is mounting to, then set the file up accordingly. Start from a correct canvas in the blank template library.
Measure the Opening Before You Order Anything
A classic backlit reprint is a graphic that came in the right size and still did not fit. Frames hide their edges, and the number printed on the box is almost never the number you should order to.
A light box has a bezel that laps over the graphic, typically between a quarter inch and an inch on each side. Manufacturers list a viewable size or graphic size next to the overall size for exactly this reason. Order to the viewable number and add whatever bleed the frame calls for, so the image runs under the bezel instead of stopping short of it and showing a white line. Retrofitting an older fixture with no spec sheet? Measure the lit opening with the old panel removed, then add a quarter inch per side.
SEG frames work differently. A silicone strip is sewn into the edge of the fabric and pushed into a groove around the frame with a plastic tool, which pulls the face drum-tight. The sewn allowance sits outside the visible area, so the panel is made larger than the opening on purpose, and the finished size we build to already accounts for it. For the frame side of the system, read what are SEG frames and how silicone edge graphics work. What you supply is artwork at the visible size with the safety margin kept clear of the perimeter, because anything within about an inch of the edge disappears into the groove.
If the fixture is going into a booth, decide the wall size before the graphic. Our display company guide covers the hardware questions worth asking, and the trade show collection shows the lit and unlit frames side by side.
Wally explains backlit
Buy the print or buy the box, then measure the opening

Wally checks the frame first. If it already lights up, he orders film and slides it in. If it does not, he orders the whole box, because the lamp and the diffuser are the expensive half. Then he measures the lit opening rather than the outside of the frame, since the bezel eats a bit of the graphic on every side. And he sends the artwork exactly as built. The press already lays extra ink on backlit stock, so brightening the file at home only makes it muddy.

Common Questions
Your backlit printing questions, answered
Is there backlit printing near me, or do I have to order online?
Most cities have a wide-format sign shop or a photo lab that can print backlit film, and a few carry blank light boxes. The catch is stock: local shops keep one or two film widths and one or two frame sizes, so anything outside that gets ordered in anyway and you wait. Order locally when you need it in your hand today or you want to test a sample against an existing frame. Order online when you need a specific size, a powered fixture, or a booth-scale SEG display, because those are made to order everywhere.
What is the difference between backlit film and a light box?
Backlit film is only the print. It is a translucent polyester sheet that goes into a lit fixture you already own, which is why it starts at $29.20 for one. A light box is the fixture: the aluminum frame, the LED panel behind it, the diffuser, and the graphic together, starting at $328.42 for one light box. If your menu board, poster case or window frame already lights up, buy the film. If you are lighting something for the first time, buy the box.
How do I set up artwork for backlit printing?
Build the file at final size at roughly 100 to 150 ppi, which is plenty for anything read from more than a few feet away. Convert to CMYK, build black as a rich black with cyan under it rather than 100 percent K, and keep reversed type a size or two larger than you would on a poster because backlighting spreads light into thin white strokes. Do not lighten the file to compensate for the lamp. Backlit stock is printed with a heavier ink lay on our side, so send the artwork as you would for any large-format job and start from a correctly sized layout in the blank template library.
What size file does a light box need?
The viewable size, not the outside dimension of the frame. Every light box has a bezel that covers the edge of the graphic, usually between a quarter inch and an inch per side, and the frame spec sheet lists the graphic or viewable size separately from the overall size. Measure the opening if you are retrofitting an old fixture, then add whatever bleed the frame calls for. Ordering to the outside dimension is the single most common reason a backlit graphic arrives too big.
Can I put a regular poster in a light box?
It will light unevenly and look dull. Poster paper is opaque, so most of the lamp output never reaches the front, and the parts that do show the LED pattern through the sheet. Backlit film has a translucent base and a diffusing layer that spreads the light, which is the whole point of the material. If you like the artwork on a poster, reprint the same file on backlit film rather than trying to make the paper work.
How long does an online backlit order take to arrive?
Production plus transit, and the transit half is the part people underestimate on a large graphic. A rolled film print ships in a tube and moves like any parcel; a light box and an SEG frame ship as freight-weight boxes and take longer to cross the country. Check the zone table in our transit times guide before you promise a date to a client, and order the frame and the graphic together so they land on the same day.
