Understanding Print Templates
What Are Blank Print Templates (And Why You Need One)
A blank print template is not the same thing as a blank Word doc or a Canva canvas. It's a file pre-configured with the exact specifications your printer needs to cut, fold, and finish your product correctly.
Bleed Area (0.125" on all sides)
Extra space beyond the final trim line. Extend your background colors and images into this area so you get clean edges after cutting. No white borders showing up where you didn't want them.
Trim Marks
Small crosshairs that show the exact cut lines. The cutter follows these marks to trim your piece to final size. Already placed at the correct positions in every 4OVER4 template.
Safe Zone (0.125" from trim)
The inner boundary. Keep all important content inside this line -- text, logos, phone numbers, QR codes. Anything outside the safe zone risks getting chopped during trimming.
Margin Guides
Professional spacing guidelines so your design doesn't look cramped against the edges. These guides maintain consistent padding between content and trim.
Without these specs, you're guessing. And guessing in print means reprints. Every 4OVER4 blank template has all four elements pre-configured to the exact product dimensions. Download the file, design inside the guides, and your file is print-ready.
Getting Started
How to Use a Blank Template in 4 Steps
From download to print-ready file in minutes.
Step 1: Download the Right Template
Pick the template that matches your product and size from the table above. PDF works with Photoshop, InDesign, and most design tools. AI is for Illustrator and compatible vector editors.
Step 2: Open in Your Design Software
Open the file in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Affinity Designer, or any app that handles PDF/AI. The bleed, trim, and safe zone guides load automatically as layers.
Step 3: Design Inside the Guides
Place your text, logos, and images inside the safe zone. Extend backgrounds and photos to the bleed edge. The template makes it obvious where everything goes. Use CMYK color mode and 300 DPI resolution.
Step 4: Export as PDF and Upload to 4OVER4
Save your finished design as a high-resolution PDF. Upload it at 4OVER4 and the team runs a free 30-point file check before printing. Any issues get flagged before ink hits paper.

Export Specs for Printing
- Resolution: 300 DPI (minimum)
- Color mode: CMYK (not RGB. RGB colors shift when printed)
- File type: PDF (preferred), TIFF, or EPS
- Fonts: Outlined/flattened (prevents font substitution on press)
Avoid These Errors
6 Print Setup Mistakes These Templates Prevent
Most file rejections and reprints happen because of setup errors, not bad design. A blank template with correct specs eliminates the most common ones.
No Bleed = White Edges
You designed a full-color card but didn't extend the background past the trim line. The cutter shifts 1mm and now there's a white strip on one side. The template's bleed area prevents this.
Text Too Close to the Edge
Your phone number is 2mm from the trim. The cutter takes it off. The safe zone guide shows you exactly where to keep important content.
Wrong Document Size
You set up a 2x3.5 canvas but that's the trim size. The file needs to be larger to include bleed. The template is already the correct total size.
RGB Instead of CMYK
You designed in RGB and the blues look purple when printed. The template file is set to CMYK color space from the start. (Note: always check your color mode before exporting.)
Low Resolution (72 DPI)
Looks sharp on screen, prints blurry on paper. 4OVER4's templates are configured at 300 DPI. If you place low-res images, the file check catches it.
Missing Trim Marks
The print shop doesn't know where to cut. The template has trim marks pre-placed at the correct positions. You don't touch them -- they're built into the file.
4OVER4's 30-point file check catches remaining issues before printing, but starting with the right template eliminates most of them upfront. Every file gets reviewed by real technicians, not an automated scanner.

Glossary
Print Terminology You Should Know
Quick reference for the specs and terms you'll see in 4OVER4's templates and on any printer's website.
- Bleed
- The extra 0.125" of space beyond the trim line on all four sides. Your background colors and images should extend into the bleed area. After trimming, the bleed gets cut off, leaving a clean edge-to-edge finish.
- Trim Line (Cut Line)
- The exact line where the paper gets cut to reach the final product size. A standard business card trims to 2" x 3.5". Everything outside the trim line gets removed.
- Safe Zone (Safety Margin)
- A boundary 0.125" inside the trim line. Critical content -- text, logos, phone numbers, QR codes -- stays inside this line. Anything between the safe zone and the trim line might get clipped due to normal cutting variation.
- CMYK
- The color mode used for printing: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black). Screens use RGB. If you design in RGB and don't convert, your colors will shift on press. Blues go purple. Greens go dull. Always design or export in CMYK.
- DPI (Dots Per Inch)
- Print resolution. 300 DPI is the standard for sharp, professional prints. Anything below 150 DPI prints visibly blurry. Screen images are typically 72 DPI, which is why web images look terrible when printed.
- Crop Marks (Trim Marks)
- Small crosshair lines at the corners of your document that show the cutter where to trim. 4OVER4's blank templates have these pre-placed. Don't move or delete them.
- Proof
- A preview of your printed piece before production starts. 4OVER4 offers online proofs (digital preview) and print proofs (physical sample). The free 30-point file check happens on every order regardless.
- Vector vs Raster
- Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) scale to any size without losing quality. Raster files (JPG, PNG, TIFF) are pixel-based and get blurry when enlarged. Logos and text should be vector whenever possible.

Our Story
Partner With Innovators
They told us we were crazy. We don't want to be sane.
The Beginning
In 1999, Google was barely starting out. WiFi didn't exist. People were afraid of Y2K. And two best friends, second-generation immigrants and patent-holding engineers in Queens, New York, launched 4OVER4.COM as the second web-based printer in the entire United States.
The Innovation
4OVER4 was the first printer to introduce full-color printing with 24 to 48 hour turnaround. When the industry said it couldn't be done that fast, they did it anyway. No compromises, no excuses, just engineering.
27 Years and Counting
Over 350 products. More than 6,000 possible combinations. 150,000+ businesses served, from solo freelancers to Google and the United Nations. A facility in Queens that still runs on vegetable inks and waterless presses — built that way from day one because it was the right thing to do.

FAQ
Blank Templates: Your Questions Answered
Common questions about blank print templates, file formats, and print specifications.
What is a blank print template?
A blank print template is an empty layout file pre-configured with the exact print specifications for a specific product. It includes bleed areas, trim marks, safe zones, and margin guides -- but no design content. You open it in your design software, create your artwork inside the guides, and export a print-ready file. It's different from a blank canvas or Word doc because all the critical print specs are already set up correctly.
What file formats are 4OVER4 blank templates available in?
Most 4OVER4 blank templates are available in PDF and AI (Adobe Illustrator) formats. PDF works with Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, GIMP, Inkscape, and Affinity apps. AI files work with Illustrator, Affinity Designer, and CorelDRAW. Some products also offer CDR (CorelDraw), INDD (InDesign), and PSD (Photoshop) formats.
Are 4OVER4 blank templates free?
Yes. Every blank template on 4OVER4 is free to download. No account required, no credit card, no strings. Download the PDF or AI file, design your artwork, and upload the finished file when you place your print order.
What is bleed in printing?
Bleed is the extra 0.125 inches (1/8 inch) of space beyond the trim line on all four sides of your design. Your background colors, images, and any edge-to-edge design elements should extend into the bleed area. After printing, the paper is cut along the trim line, and the bleed area gets removed. This ensures clean edges with no white borders -- even if the cutter shifts slightly. Every 4OVER4 blank template has the bleed area pre-configured.
What is the safe zone?
The safe zone (also called safety margin) is a boundary 0.125 inches inside the trim line. All critical content -- text, logos, phone numbers, QR codes, website URLs -- must stay inside this line. Anything between the safe zone and the trim line risks getting partially cut off during the trimming process. 4OVER4's templates show the safe zone clearly so you know exactly where to place important elements.
Do I need design software to use blank templates?
Yes, blank templates require design software that can open PDF or AI files -- Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Affinity Designer, GIMP (free), or Inkscape (free). If you don't have design software, use 4OVER4's free online editor Canvs instead. Canvs has all print specs built in automatically, plus 10,000+ pre-designed templates you can customize.
What resolution should I use for print files?
300 DPI (dots per inch) is the standard for professional printing. Anything below 150 DPI will print visibly blurry. Screen images and web graphics are typically 72 DPI, which is why they look terrible when printed at full size. 4OVER4's blank templates are already configured at 300 DPI. If you place low-resolution images in the template, 4OVER4's 30-point file check will flag the issue before printing.
Should I design in CMYK or RGB?
Always design in CMYK for print. CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is the color mode printers use. RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is for screens. If you design in RGB and don't convert to CMYK before exporting, your colors will shift when printed -- blues go purple, greens go dull. 4OVER4's blank templates are set to CMYK color space by default.
How many products have blank templates?
4OVER4 offers blank templates for 1,000+ print products including business cards, postcards, flyers, brochures, booklets, bookmarks, envelopes, greeting cards, door hangers, hangtags, posters, rackcards, banners, stickers, labels, yard signs, table throws, and more. If you need a template for a product not listed, contact 4OVER4's team for a custom template.
What is the difference between blank templates and design templates?
Blank templates give you an empty layout with only print specs (bleed, trim, safe zone). You bring your own design. Design templates are pre-made layouts with colors, fonts, images, and text that you customize. Blank templates require design software; design templates can be edited in 4OVER4's free Canvs online editor with no software needed. Both are free.
