How to apply a door decal

Nearly every bad decal application fails for the same two reasons: a surface that was not truly clean, and someone starting at a corner. Twenty minutes and a credit card's worth of technique fix both.

1. Clean and degrease the door. Glass cleaner alone leaves a film. Wash the area with soapy water, then wipe it with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry fully. Fingerprints, dust and cleaning-product residue are what a decal actually fails to stick to, not the door.
2. Position it with a tape hinge. Hold the decal in place with the backing still on, step back and check it from a few feet away and from outside the door, then run a strip of masking tape across the top edge so it can pivot. 3. Squeegee from the center out. Flip the decal up on its hinge, peel the backing away, then lay it down from the middle outward with a squeegee or a credit card wrapped in a cloth, in overlapping strokes toward the edges. Air escapes ahead of the stroke. Starting at an edge traps air in the middle with nowhere to go, and that is a bubble you cannot push out afterward.
4. Remove the transfer layer at a low angle. If your decal has a transfer layer over the face, peel it back slowly, almost flat against the door rather than straight out. Pulling upward lifts the decal with it. If a section starts to come away, lay it back down, squeegee that area again and continue.

Apply above roughly 50 degrees Fahrenheit if you can, since adhesive on a cold glass door is slow to grab, and give it a day before cleaning around it.
