Why Clear Film Needs a White Ink Layer

This is the part that surprises people who have only printed on white stock. Ink is not opaque. Lay a color onto clear film and whatever sits behind the film, the street, a lit display, a dark shopfront interior, comes through it, so a strong brand red reads as a red tint rather than as red. Nothing is wrong with the print. There is simply nothing behind the ink to bounce light back at the viewer.

Where you want the see-through effect, keep those areas unprinted on purpose. A logo with an open counter, type that shows the room behind it, a graphic that fades into clear glass, all of them depend on the film being left bare. Put those areas on their own clearly named layer in your file and say in the order notes which parts must stay see-through, so nothing gets backed up with a layer that was meant to stay clear.

Single Layer or Double Layer: Day and Night

On a clear film, how the graphic holds up comes down to the light around it. A single layer print is one pass of ink, and in daylight on a plain window it reads crisp and bright. But when strong light pushes through the glass, a single layer can look thin or washed out. That is what the double layer print fixes. It adds a second pass so less light bleeds through the ink, and your colors stay solid and vivid at night or on a lit surface.
