A Wine Label Cut to Your Shape, Not a Box

A rectangle boxes a wine bottle in, and your artwork rarely wants to be boxed. An any shape wine label is die-cut to whatever outline you supply, a crest, a banner, a shield or a curve that hugs the glass, so the label follows your line instead of a preset edge. You send the shape, and every one prints full color on a durable adhesive film and arrives wound on a roll ready to apply, starting at $267.89 for 250. It is the kind of die work 4OVER4.COM has been cutting for labels since 1999.

These labels earn their keep on a bottle. They cut to the shape of your design, they print on a film built to survive a chiller or a wet bottle, and they arrive on a roll so you can apply by hand or feed an applicator. The price rewards a bigger run. A set of 250 starts at $267.89, and the per-label cost keeps sliding as the count climbs, so a full production run for a season costs far less per label than a short test batch. What Are Any Shape Wine Labels?

Any shape wine labels are custom die-cut labels printed full color on White Gloss or White BOPP film, cut to any outline you supply rather than a preset rectangle or oval. People reach for them when the label shape is part of the brand: a crest on a wine bottle, a badge on a craft spirit, a banner on a cider, or a soft-cornered outline on an artisan oil or sauce. Because the die follows your artwork, the label reads as part of the design instead of a sticker stuck on top. If you want a rounder, ready-cut option instead, the Shaped Wine Labels sit right beside this one.

What Size and Shape Can They Be?

Two choices define the label: the size box and the cut. The size runs from a small 1" x 1" label up to a 6" x 6", in six one-inch steps, so you can hug a slim spirit bottle or wrap a wide face, with 1" x 1" as the default. The cut is where these earn their name. Instead of a fixed rectangle, the die follows the outline in your file, so a crest, a shield, a banner or a soft-cornered oval all come off the roll as that shape. Every size and material sits in the configurator exactly the way it prints, so you know what you can change before you change it. For the full lineup of wine label formats, the Roll Wine Labels and the standard Wine Labels round out the range.

Here are a few easy ways to make an any shape wine label pull its weight.

Popular Wine Label Shapes

Oval. The most ordered shape after the rectangle, and the easiest to apply well. An oval has no corners to lift, which is what corners do first on a bottle that has been through an ice bucket, and the curve of the label sits with the curve of the glass instead of fighting it. On a standard 750 ml bottle an oval reads as the classic estate label, and it is the shape most people picture when they picture a wine bottle.

Round. A circle is the shape to use when the label is a seal, a vintage mark or a back of neck badge rather than the main face. Kept small, in the lower half of the size range, it works as a second label alongside a larger front. Kept large it fills the flat belly of the bottle and leaves a lot of glass showing above and below, which is a deliberate look rather than an accident.

Arched or dome top. A flat bottom with a curved top edge. It gives the winery name somewhere to sit above the varietal, and it draws the eye upward toward the neck and the capsule. Because the bottom edge stays straight, it is easy to line up level on the bottle by eye, which an oval is not.

Rectangle with radius corners. The compromise for anyone who wants the space a rectangle gives but not the corners that lift. You get full width for a long varietal name or a paragraph of estate copy, and the softened corners survive handling and chilling far better than square ones.

Shield. A wide top narrowing to a point or a curve at the bottom. It carries a crest, a family name or a heraldic mark and reads as heritage, which is why it turns up on reserve bottlings and library releases more than on everyday labels.

Fully custom. Anything you can draw as a closed vector path: a banner, a leaf, a mountain profile, the outline of a vineyard block. This is the reason the product exists. The die follows your line, so the only real limit is that the shape has to fit inside one of the 6 set sizes, from a 1" x 1" label up to 6" x 6".

Whatever the outline, remember what a bottle actually is: a cylinder. The wider the label, the more it has to bend around the glass, and a shape wider than about two thirds of the visible bottle face will start to show tension at its widest points. Tall shapes wrap easily. Wide shapes need a shape that is forgiving at the edges, which is another argument for the oval and the radius corner rectangle.

Pick the material for where the bottle lives

White Gloss is a clean indoor film for bottles that stay on a shelf or a table. White BOPP is a tougher plastic film rated for indoor and outdoor use, so it holds up against moisture, a chiller or a cold bottle that sweats. Add a gloss lamination for shine and scuff resistance, a matte silk lamination for a softer premium feel, or leave the film bare.

Draw the die line into your art

The shape is only as clean as the outline you supply. Build your artwork to the exact edge you want cut, order a free online proof, and check that the die line lands where you expect before the run prints. Upload the file as a print-ready PDF, JPG or PNG.

How Are the Labels Delivered and Proofed?

These labels come on a roll, not a sheet. The core is 3 inches, and you pick from 5 unwind positions so the label leaves the roll the way your applicator expects, whether that is top of copy first, bottom of copy first, or one of the other settings. Before anything runs you can order a free online proof to check the die line and color, or choose straight to production if you already trust the file. Standard production is 6 business days, and print-ready files upload as a PDF, JPG or PNG built to your custom outline.

Draw the die line into your art

A shaped label is cut to a path you supply, so the file has to say where that path is. Draw the outline as a single closed vector path in your artwork file, put it on its own layer, and name it clearly, for example DieLine or CutContour. Give it a spot colour of its own that is used nowhere else in the design and set that colour to overprint, so the cut path stays visible in the proof without printing as an ink on the finished label. A die line drawn as a black hairline on the artwork layer will print.

Extend the background of the design 0.125 inch past the die line on every side. That bleed is what stops a white sliver appearing along one edge when the cut lands a fraction off, and on a curved shape it matters more than on a rectangle, because a rotation of a degree or two moves the cut differently at every point around the outline. Pull all text and logos 0.125 inch inside the die line for the same reason. On an arched or dome top label the tightest part of the curve is where type gets clipped first, so check the top of the arch specifically.

To submit an oval, an arch or any other curve, send the vector outline in the file itself rather than describing it or supplying a picture of it. A JPEG of a shape is not a die line and cannot be cut from. If you only have a sketch, send the artwork with the widest and tallest dimensions marked and ask for the outline to be drawn during prepress. Either way, the free online proof shows the die line over your artwork before anything is cut, and that proof is the moment to check the shape, not after the roll ships.

How Do They Compare to Other Wine Labels?

Any shape wine labels are the pick when the outline itself is part of the design, but they are not your only move. If you are weighing a ready-cut shape, a roll format or a standard rectangle, it helps to see the trade-off in plain numbers. The chart below lines up any shape wine labels against their closest siblings so you can compare the starting price on each before you choose.

If the outline is not the point and you want the finish to be, look at premium wine labels, where the material and lamination do the work. If you want a shape but from a set list rather than a drawing of your own, shaped wine labels cover the common outlines with less prepress on your side. And if you are applying by machine rather than by hand, roll wine labels are the ones to specify unwind direction on, since a labelling head cares about which way the label comes off the core.
