Rounded Corner Flyers vs Square Corner Flyers Compared

One is trimmed on a blade, the other is cut on a die. That single difference decides the size you can order, the day it ships, and whether your border still looks straight.

Round the corners when the flyer is handed to someone and kept, and keep them square when it is mailed, folded, or bigger than 4 by 6 inches. Rounded corner flyers are die cut at one size, 4 by 6, on 6 stocks, and they ship on a 5 business day standard turnaround from $34.05 for 50. Standard flyers are guillotine trimmed square in 9 sizes up to 11 by 25.5 plus custom, ship in 3 business days, and start at $39.54. The corner also changes your artwork: a square border loses its even margin against a curved cut.

Quick answer

A blade cuts square, a die cuts the curve

The corner is not a style setting, it is a second machine. Square flyers leave the guillotine finished, which keeps them cheap, fast and available in 9 sizes. Rounded corners need a steel rule die, so the product is locked to 4 by 6, takes two extra business days on the standard schedule, and costs more per sheet at volume. What you get back is a flyer that does not dog ear in a bag, which matters on coated stock where a bent corner cracks the coating and shows white.

Square corner and rounded corner flyers, with the corner magnified The same 4 by 6 inch flyer drawn twice. Bleed and safety margins are identical on both. On the rounded version a die cuts an arc through the corner, so a square border frame ends up much closer to the cut at the corner than along the sides. One 4 x 6 flyer, two corner finishes SQUARE CORNER, GUILLOTINE TRIM ROUNDED CORNER, DIE CUT die radius THE CORNER, MAGNIFIED margin along the side the same frame sits about half as far from the cut here paper removed by the die cut line bleed safety Bleed and safety do not change when you round a corner. The die arc does: a square border frame loses its even margin, so draw the frame with the same radius.

What Actually Changes When You Round the Corners

Die-cut flyers printed by 4OVER4 showing a shaped edge cut on a die rather than a straight trim

A square flyer is finished on a guillotine. The press sheet comes off the press, a tall lift goes under a straight blade, and three cuts later you have a stack of rectangles. It is the fastest and cheapest cut in the building, which is the real reason square is the default on every flyer we print.

A rounded corner is a different machine. The shape is a steel rule die, bent to the outline and pressed through a much shorter lift of sheets, so the curve is identical on sheet 1 and sheet 4,000 rather than eyeballed by hand. That single change ripples into three things you will notice on the order form.

Size gets locked. A die exists for one trim size, so rounded corner flyers are 4 by 6 inches and nothing else. Standard flyers come in 9 sizes from a 4.25 by 5.5 handbill up to 11 by 25.5, plus custom sizing, and every one of those is square.

Turnaround gets longer. Rounded corner flyers run a 5 business day standard turnaround. Standard flyers run 3. Both have rush tiers down to same day, so this is a cost question rather than a wall.

You get a corner choice. All four corners rounded, or a single rounded corner. If you want a shape that is not a rectangle at all, die-cut flyers carry 6 die shapes including a leaf cut, a half circle side and a 4 inch circle. Our guide to die cutting covers how those dies are made.

Rounded Corner Flyers and Square Corner Flyers, Side by Side

Four flyer products cover almost every corner decision, and the sizes column is the one that usually settles it before price ever comes up.

Read the entry prices carefully, because they are measuring different things. Rounded corner flyers sell from 50 up and standard flyers from 100 up, so the cheaper looking number is just a smaller minimum. What matters at campaign volume is the per sheet cost: 500 rounded corner flyers come to $88.98 and 1,000 come to $164.75, about 16 cents each. A square sheet at the same count is lower, because nothing touched it after the blade.

Club flyers are the quiet answer when the 4 by 6 lock is the problem. They go to 6 by 11, they carry 22 stocks up to a rigid 26pt, and rounded corners are an option rather than the whole product. If you are still choosing a format, the flyers printing category lists all of them next to each other.

Designing a Flyer That Suits a Rounded Corner

Rounded and shaped flyers printed by 4OVER4 with artwork running to the cut edge

Bleed and safety do not change when you round a corner. Art still runs past the trim, live text still sits inside the safety margin, and the file is built at the same 4 by 6. The trap is smaller and more specific than most people expect.

Anything that runs parallel to the edge breaks first. Draw a square border a quarter inch in from the trim and it keeps that quarter inch along all four sides, but at the corner the curved cut swings inward and the frame ends up roughly half as far from the edge as it is anywhere else. On a clean run it still reads as a mistake. Give the frame the same corner radius as the die, or drop the frame and let the background bleed off all four sides. The diagram above shows the geometry at the corner.

Two more habits are worth building. Keep logos and headlines out of the corner arc entirely, because a corner is where a small shift on press is most visible. And be careful with reversed type near the cut, since a thin white rule chasing a curve draws the eye straight to any variation. Bleed and trim explained covers the underlying margins if you are setting up a print file for the first time.

Start from a press ready layout rather than measuring it yourself. The blank template library has the trim, bleed and safe margin already drawn for each flyer size, and the flyer size guide explains which sizes suit a rack, a table drop or a hand off.

Which Corner to Print, Job by Job

Club flyers printed by 4OVER4 on heavy stock, the format that offers rounded corners across more sizes

Round the corners when the flyer is handed over and kept. Menus and specials cards that live on a table, event handouts that go into a bag, price lists at a counter, real estate leave behinds: all of them get carried, stacked and pushed around, and a square corner on 14pt or 16pt gloss cover dog ears fast. When that corner bends, the coating cracks and shows a white crease, which reads as a piece that has been sitting around. A rounded corner has nothing to catch on.

The case gets stronger as the stock gets stiffer. On the 15pt synthetic plastic option, a square corner is genuinely sharp against a hand, and it is the one stock where rounding the corners is a practical decision rather than a cosmetic one.

Keep the corners square for anything mailed or inserted. Rounded corners buy no postage discount and no automation advantage, and inside an envelope nobody sees the edge, so the die pass is money spent on nothing. Our guide to mailing flyers covers what actually drives postage, and postcards vs flyers is the better read if the piece is going in the mail at all. Square also wins whenever you need a size the die does not cover, whenever the piece is folded, and whenever the run is large enough that a fraction of a cent per sheet matters more than the edge.

The honest middle ground: order 50 rounded corner flyers alongside a square test batch before committing a campaign. It costs $34.05 to find out whether the corner is doing anything for your particular piece, which is cheaper than guessing across 5,000 sheets.

Wally explains the corner

One blade, one die, two different flyers

Wally, the 4OVER4 mascot with a 4, holding a square corner flyer in one hand and a rounded corner flyer in the other, with a corner die between them

Wally trims the square stack on a guillotine in seconds, then swaps to a steel rule die for the rounded ones and works in shorter lifts. That is the whole trade. The die costs him two business days and locks the size to 4 by 6, and it gives you a corner that will not dog ear in somebody's bag. His one warning: if your layout has a square border, redraw it with the same radius, because the curve steals the margin at the corner.

Common Questions

Your rounded corner questions, answered

Do rounded corners cost more than square corners on a flyer?

Per flyer, yes, because the sheet takes a second pass on a die instead of leaving the guillotine finished. The entry prices look inverted at first glance: rounded corner flyers start at $34.05 and standard flyers start at $39.54, but that is the minimum set talking. Rounded corner flyers sell from 50 up, standard flyers from 100 up. Run the quantity out and the gap shows plainly: 500 rounded corner flyers are $88.98 and 1,000 are $164.75, roughly 16 cents a sheet, while a square flyer at the same count lands lower because nothing shaped it after the cut.

What size are rounded corner flyers?

Four by six inches, and only that. The corner die is built for one trim size, so there is no 8.5 by 11 rounded corner flyer in the catalog. If you need rounded corners on something larger, club flyers go up to 6 by 11 with rounded corners as an option, and a custom die cut handles anything past that. If you need the bigger sheet more than you need the corners, print standard flyers square and spend the difference on 16pt stock.

Does rounding the corners slow the order down?

By two business days on the standard schedule. Rounded corner flyers run a 5 business day standard turnaround, standard flyers run 3. Both carry rush tiers down to same day, so a Friday event is still printable on a Wednesday decision, you just pay for the speed. Order the die cut version first if a job is tight, since the rush clock is what you are buying.

How do I set up artwork for a rounded corner flyer?

Build the file at 4 by 6 with the usual bleed and keep live text inside the safety margin, exactly as you would for a square flyer. The one thing that changes is anything that runs parallel to the edge. A square border frame keeps its margin along the sides but the corner of that frame ends up much closer to the curved cut, so it reads as uneven even on a perfect run. Either give the frame the same corner radius or use a full bleed background instead. Start from a correctly sized layout in the blank template library rather than measuring it yourself.

Can you round only one corner?

Yes. Rounded corner flyers offer all four corners rounded or a single rounded corner. One corner is a quieter effect and it keeps three square corners for a border to sit against, though the frame still mismatches at the rounded one. It is worth considering when the layout has a strong edge treatment you do not want to redraw.

Do rounded corners help a flyer get through the mail?

No. Postage is set by size, thickness, aspect ratio and how the piece is addressed, not by the shape of the corner, so a rounded corner buys no discount and no automation advantage. It also gets flattened inside an envelope where nobody sees the edge. For mailed campaigns put the money into stock and the address side instead, and check the layout rules before the run.
