What Each Liner Does to Your Artwork
Process inks are transparent. They tint the paper rather than covering it, which is the single fact that governs everything on this page. On a white liner the color you specify is close to the color you get. On kraft, every value shifts warm and drops in brightness, because the brown is still showing through.
In practice that means kraft handles solid dark colors well and pale ones badly. A deep green, a near black, a burnt orange, a heavy line drawing: all of these land cleanly on brown. A soft pink, a pale gray, a mint tint, or anything with a white knockout inside the mark will disappoint, because the press has no white ink to lay down and the unprinted area is brown by definition. When the Flute Is Worth Paying For
A flute is an arch turned on its side and repeated. Press down on it and the wave resists, which is why a thin sheet of corrugated carries a load that a much thicker solid board would fold under. That is the whole reason corrugated exists, and it is the only reason to pay for it.
Three situations justify the cost. First, the box is the shipper and nothing protects it but tape and a courier. Second, the product is heavy or breakable, so the wall has to absorb an impact rather than transmit it. Is a kraft box weaker than a white box?
Not because it is brown. Strength comes from the flute profile and the basis weight of the liners, not from whether the outer liner was bleached. A kraft corrugated mailer and a white corrugated mailer built on the same board behave the same on a pallet. What does change is the surface: bleaching costs a step and slightly reduces fiber strength in the liner itself, but on the board grades used for retail and ecommerce packaging that difference is not what fails a box. Can you print white ink on a kraft box?
Standard process printing cannot. CMYK inks are transparent, so what looks like white in your file is simply the unprinted substrate showing through, and on kraft that substrate is brown. Designers work around it by treating the kraft color as a deliberate background and using one or two solid dark colors on top, which is why so much kraft packaging is printed in a single black or a deep brand color.
