Where the Shine Comes From in Each Finish
Every sticker we print is the same four layer sandwich: a carrier liner, adhesive, a face stock, and ink on top. All three of these finishes use that stack. The only thing that moves is where the shiny layer sits, and that single detail decides how the sticker behaves in someone's hand.
Holographic puts the shine under the ink. The face stock carries a microscopic embossed pattern that splits white light into its component colors. Move the sticker and the color travels across the surface. Your artwork prints on top of that, which is why open areas matter so much: the effect can only show where you left the material visible.
Foil puts the shine on top of the ink. The sticker prints in full color CMYK first, then a real metallic foil layer is applied over the areas you specified. It is a mirror, so it throws light back in one direction. Hold it at the right angle and it flares. Hold it at the wrong one and it reads as dark gray.
Metallic ink puts the shine inside the ink. Silver PMS 877 or gold PMS 872 is laid down on press like any other spot color, with metal flake suspended in the ink film. The glow is even, it never flares, and it never goes dark, because there is no mirror surface to catch a single angle.

Read the third column before the fifth. The behavior column is what your customer experiences, and it is where most of the regret comes from. People order holographic expecting foil brightness and get a soft rainbow. People order metallic ink expecting a mirror and get a warm, even silver that photographs beautifully but does not flash.

Designing Artwork That Actually Shines
Most disappointing specialty stickers were designed as flat stickers and then upgraded at checkout. The finish cannot rescue artwork that gives it nothing to work with, so build the file for the effect you picked.
For holographic, treat the material as a color in your palette. Reverse type and logo shapes out of solid blocks so the rainbow reads through the openings. Keep at least a third of the sticker free of dense ink. A white underprint is available on some holographic work and it is worth knowing what it does: it blocks the effect completely wherever it lands, which is useful when you need legible small type over a busy rainbow and fatal when applied by accident across a whole panel.
For foil, think in solid shapes only. Foil has no halftone. Supply the foil areas as a separate 100 percent solid layer, keep strokes at half a point or heavier, and avoid fine serifs below about 8 point, because a thin foil line can break up along its edge. Registration is tight but it is not infinite, so a foil element that has to sit exactly inside a 1 point printed outline is asking for trouble. For metallic ink, design as you would for any spot color. It screens, so a 40 percent tint of PMS 877 gives you a soft pewter. It overprints, so a metallic under a CMYK build shifts the whole result warmer or cooler. The one thing it will not do is look like a mirror, so do not sell a client on foil and deliver ink.

Which Finish to Order, and When to Skip All Three
Pick by the job, not by the sample that looked best on screen.
- Holographic when the sticker is the product or the seal on it. Sticker packs people collect, limited runs, authenticity seals on a box, anything a person picks up and turns over. Is a holographic sticker the same as a foil sticker?
No, although the words get swapped constantly. Holographic material carries a microscopic pattern that splits white light into a rainbow, so the color you see depends on the angle you hold it at. A foil sticker means one of two things: a mirror-bright foil accent stamped on top of a printed sticker, or a sticker printed on a solid metallic foil face stock. Both are single color and neither shifts hue as you turn it. Will a holographic sticker still work if my design covers the whole thing?

If the artwork genuinely needs full coverage, put the money into die cutting or a heavier vinyl instead and skip the specialty stock.
