Question
How do I make sure my envelopes are USPS compatible?
Answer
To qualify for standard USPS letter rates, an envelope has to stay inside a defined size and shape window. Miss it and the piece gets bumped to a higher rate or returned.
| Requirement | Spec |
|---|---|
| Minimum size | 3.5" x 5" |
| Maximum size | 6.125" x 11.5" |
| Maximum thickness | 1/4 inch |
| Aspect ratio | Between 1.3 and 2.5 |
| Shape | Rectangular |
- Keep the lower-right quadrant clear so the address and barcode print cleanly.
- Square or oddly shaped envelopes usually require extra postage.
- Rigid or lumpy contents can push you past the 1/4 inch thickness limit.
Design to these numbers from the start and your mail moves at the lowest rate without surprises.
