Which printing finish is best for business cards?
The best finish depends on the impression you want to make and how the card gets handled day to day. Each option changes the way the card catches light and feels in the hand, so it helps to match the finish to the message.
- Soft-touch matte: a velvety, low-glare surface that resists fingerprints and reads calm and premium, popular with consultants, designers, and wellness brands, and the most requested finish overall.
- Spot UV: a glossy, raised-looking coating applied to specific areas like a logo, so it pops against a matte background.
- Foil stamping: metallic gold, silver, copper, or holographic accents that signal luxury and catch the eye at events.
- Gloss lamination: a shiny, protective layer that makes photography and bold color look vivid, the best pick for photo-heavy designs.
- Plain matte: an understated, non-reflective look that is easy to write on.
Many designs combine two finishes, for example a soft-touch base with spot UV on the logo, to add contrast you can both see and feel. If you want one finish that flatters most designs, start with soft-touch matte and layer spot UV where you want emphasis.
If people will write on the card, such as an appointment time or a note, keep a matte or uncoated area free of gloss so the pen takes.
Finish and stock compared
A coating changes the surface; the stock decides how long the card lasts in a wallet. Compare them together.
| Option | Look and feel | How it holds up | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Velvet laminated | Soft and matte, close to suede under a finger | Strong: the laminate film seals the face against scuffs and fingerprints | A calm, premium card for daily handouts |
| Cotton | Thick, soft and uncoated, with a natural fiber texture | Good: a heavy sheet resists bending, but an uncoated face shows wear sooner | Cards people write on, and a handmade look |
| Ultra thick linen | A fine woven grain you see and feel | Good: the thickness keeps corners crisp and the texture hides small marks | Classic brands in law, finance and consulting |
| Raised spot UV | Clear gloss built up on one area, so you feel it | Strong on the coated area, best over a laminated stock | A logo or pattern that should stand out to the touch |
| Foil stamped | Metallic gold, silver or color that catches the light | Strong: the foil is pressed into the surface | Names and logos that should read as luxury |
Spot UV, foil and embossing
Spot UV adds gloss to one area and leaves the rest matte, so a logo pops without changing the whole card. Raised spot UV goes further and adds texture you can feel. Foil stamping presses metal onto the card for a shine no ink can match, and embossing pushes the paper up so the design stands in relief. Both work best on a thicker stock, which holds a clean edge. Give each finish one element: foil on the logo over a velvet card reads clean, while foil, embossing and spot UV on the same name compete.
